About This Role
- Analog Devices is seeking an Analog Design Intern – Power Management to join our engineering team in Edinburgh.
- The successful candidate will join a collaborative team developing advanced low-power analog and power-management IP for highly integrated mixed-signal ICs.
- Working alongside experienced analog, mixed-signal and power-management engineers, the intern will contribute to real IC development activities while gaining practical experience in circuit architecture, transistor-level design, modelling, simulation and verification.
- The team develops power-management solutions with a strong focus on low-power operation, high efficiency and small solution size .
- Key areas include switched-mode DC/DC converters such as buck, boost and buck-boost architectures , together with the analog building blocks required for their control, monitoring and protection.
- This internship provides an opportunity to apply university knowledge to real silicon designs and develop an understanding of the complete IC development process, from architecture and modelling through circuit implementation, physical design, verification and potentially silicon evaluation.
- Responsibilities Conduct circuit architecture research and feasibility studies for low-power power-management functions.
- Contribute to the architecture, design, simulation and verification of DC/DC converter IP , including buck, boost and buck-boost topologies.
- Design and analyse analog sub-circuits used within power converters, potentially including error amplifiers, comparators, voltage/current references, oscillators, gate drivers, level shifters, current-sensing circuits and protection functions .
- Develop simulation testbenches and contribute to design verification across process, voltage, temperature and operating-load conditions.
- Analyse important converter performance trade-offs including efficiency, quiescent current, transient response, output ripple, stability, silicon area and external component requirements .
- Explore different converter operating modes and control techniques to optimise efficiency across load conditions.
- Contribute to behavioural and system-level modelling to evaluate converter architectures and control-loop performance.
- Work closely with layout engineers during physical implementation, including review of parasitic effects and layout-dependent performance.
- Participate in technical and design reviews with experienced analog and power-management engineers.
- Support top-level integration and verification of power-management IP within larger mixed-signal systems.
- Where appropriate, contribute to laboratory evaluation and comparison of simulated and measured silicon performance.
- Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing a BEng, MEng, MSc or PhD in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics or a closely related discipline.
- Good understanding of fundamental analog electronics and circuit theory.
- Understanding of CMOS devices and basic transistor-level circuit operation.
- Familiarity with feedback systems, frequency response and stability.
- Basic understanding of power electronics and switching circuits.
- Some experience with circuit simulation or electronic design tools through university, personal or industry projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for learning and working collaboratively within an engineering team.
- Preferred Qualifications Understanding of DC/DC converter architectures , particularly buck, boost or buck-boost converters.
- Familiarity with concepts such as PWM/PFM operation, feedback control, loop stability and transient response.
- Familiarity with transistor-level IC design and tools such as Cadence Virtuoso and Spectre .
- Exposure to power-converter modelling or simulation using tools such as SIMPLIS, MATLAB or Simulink .
- Understanding of common power-management building blocks such as LDOs, voltage/current references, comparators, oscillators, current sensing and gate drivers.
- Familiarity with low-power circuit-design techniques and quiescent-current optimisation.
- Experience using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads and signal generators.
- Programming or scripting experience using Python, MATLAB or similar tools for modelling, simulation or data analysis.
- A strong interest in analog IC design, power management and energy-efficient electronic systems .
- For positions requiring access to technical data, Analog Devices, Inc. may have to obtain export licensing approval from the U.S.
- Department of Commerce - Bureau of Industry and Security and/or the U.S.
- Department of State - Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
- As such, applicants for this position – except US Citizens, US Permanent Residents, and protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) – may have to go through an export licensing review process.
